Tindley Temple was built in the 1920s, after the congregation of East Calvary United Methodist Church outgrew their building on Bainbridge Street. The Church is named for the Pastor at the time, Reverend Dr. Charles A. Tindley.
Dr. Charles Tindley and his wife were honored by East Calvary Church for their sixteen years of service. The event was attended by many, and Dr. Tindley received many gifts of cash and clothing.
Rev. Tindley promotes the importance of African American education for the future in his Emancipation address at Zion Baptist Church. He believes that the combination of "trained hands and an educated head" creates a model citizen.
